FAT BIKE FORK SELECTION
CONSULTATION SERVICE
“What is the best Fat Bike suspension fork for my bike?”
We receive many calls and emails about this topic.
MANY PEOPLE PICK THE WRONG SUSPENSION FORK CONFIGURATION FOR THEIR FAT BIKE AND IT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT HANDLING, WEIGHT BALANCE AND PERFORMANCE.
We know fat Bike suspension forks are an investment of about $1300 (or more) CAD, and there are 15 different forks (and variations thereof) from several leading manufacturers to choose from in North America.
Whichever suspension fork you choose, it WILL change the performance and handling of your bike (either for better or for worse).
We have tested all these forks, and provided extensive reviews on many of them.
Customer Service is very important to us, and providing you the dedicated “free time” to answer this question during the current busy season is very limited. The best option is to purchase a block of consulting time. The flat fee of $95 CAD ensures you get the dedicated time needed to figure out the best Fat Bike suspension fork for your bike, and our time is compensated in doing so.
The $95 CAD consulting fee can be applied as a discount towards your Fat Bike suspension fork purchase, for all Canadian customers.
During this consultation, which may take up to 45 minutes, we will research a number of variables that can affect (existing frame geometry/components/rider bio-metrics), or will be effected (by the addition of a suspension fork).
Our goal is to find the two “best-fit” scenarios to choose from. Topics covered include :
Frame Size
Frame Geometry
Frame’s manufacture date
Stack and Reach
HT and ST angles
Tire / Wheelset Sizes
Climate/Weather riding conditions
Manufacturer warranty policies (which may be voided if using particular forks)
Bottom Bracket changes
Rider Height / Weight
Preferred Trail types
ASTM / CAT ratings of the components used on the bike
“non-suspension corrected” frames

ACCESSORIES
EXTENDED CROWN RACES
If you own a fat bike frame that is not a “suspension-corrected” design, it may have been fabricated prior to 2016. After installing a fat bike suspension fork on one of these frames, you may find the fork contacts the frame if turned 90 degrees.
If this is the case, you will need a Crown Race Extender, to prevent damage to the bike or injury to the rider. Luckily, there are two sources for these parts at time of writing (Summer 2020).
CANE CREEK (North Carolina USA) makes +3mm and +6mm extended crown races.
MTB TOOLS (California USA) machines custom extended crown races in lengths from +5mm to +25mm.
Prices range from $15 to $30 USD, or approximately $50-75 CAD after shipping and importation fees are assessed.
MASTODON PRO
IRT - INFINITE RATE TUNE
$90 USD / $125+ CAD
The Manitou Dorado IRT allows far more customization of the stock Mastodon PRO air spring.
Infinite Rate Tune (IRT) is a two-stage air spring configuration that allows for advanced spring rate tuning by independently adjusting air pressures in the beginning, mid and end strokes. The IRT secondary positive air spring affects only the middle to end stroke of the fork. This allows the primary air spring to be set to lower pressures for improved small bump sensitivity while maintaining independently adjustable mid-stroke support and end-stroke ramp-up.
